Pakistan to Introduce Cashless Toll Collection on Motorways
Pakistan is set to modernize its motorway system with the introduction of a fully digital travel experience. Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has instructed relevant departments to speed up the deployment of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and implement cashless electronic toll collection across major motorways and highways.
As part of the initiative, the M-2 Motorway will be connected to the ITS framework, while toll plazas will be integrated with Safe City systems. Advanced surveillance cameras, communication networks, and security technologies will also be installed under a centralized digital platform.
Authorities say the shift to cashless toll payments will help reduce traffic congestion, improve traffic flow, and provide a more convenient travel experience. The government also plans to strengthen motorway safety by stationing Rescue 1122 teams, ambulances, fire brigades, and Motorway Police personnel at service areas nationwide.
