Punjab has rolled out a new cashless fare payment system for its public transport network, enabling passengers to pay digitally through a mobile application and a smart transit card. The initiative is designed to make travel on metro and electric bus services quicker, more secure, and hassle-free.
The digital payment system has been introduced through a joint effort by the provincial transport and information technology authorities. It aims to replace traditional cash payments and physical fare tokens with a modern electronic payment method.
As part of the transition, the previous token and transit card system has been discontinued for metro trains, metro buses, and city bus services. Passengers are no longer able to use the old cards, and any remaining balance stored on them will not be reimbursed.
Commuters who return their old transit cards will receive only the refundable security deposit. The cards must be submitted at designated service centers or approved stations.
Meanwhile, some passengers have expressed concerns over the change, claiming that the transition was not communicated clearly. A number of commuters also reported receiving conflicting instructions regarding the recharge of the discontinued cards.
