The Punjab government has announced a complete ban on the purchase of new petrol and diesel vehicles by all provincial government departments, aiming to cut emissions and encourage environmentally friendly transportation.
Under the new directive, departments will now be allowed to acquire only electric or hybrid vehicles, with the exception of vehicles used for field operations.
The decision was confirmed during a high-level meeting in Lahore, where Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb stated that the policy reflects Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s vision to make Punjab a greener and environmentally conscious province.
Officials also clarified that no new petrol station will be permitted to operate without EV charging infrastructure. So far, NOCs have been issued for 170 new petrol pumps in 31 cities across Punjab, all mandated to install electric vehicle chargers.
This move is seen as a major step towards promoting clean energy, reducing carbon emissions, and modernizing Pakistan’s transport infrastructure.
