New electric buses will soon operate in multiple cities including Attock, Bhakkar, Hafizabad, Khanewal, Layyah, Sheikhupura, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Mandi Bahauddin, and Okara.
The Chief Minister of Punjab gave approval for these buses during a special meeting held to assess the progress of mass transit projects in Gujranwala and Faisalabad. She also instructed officials to speed up construction and renovation work on metro bus stations and approved updated design plans.
During the meeting, it was revealed that over 125,000 passengers have already benefited from the government’s free transport program across 21 routes, with more than 3,560 bus trips completed so far.
Authorities shared that 100 electric buses are expected to arrive within the current month, followed by 350 buses by mid-May and another 264 by the end of June.
It was further decided that dedicated depots for electric buses will be established in every division of the province. The Chief Minister also requested a detailed plan to expand the service to 1,500 electric buses at the tehsil level.
In a separate discussion, progress on Punjab’s first electric taxi initiative was reviewed. Officials stated that 194 electric taxis are likely to be delivered in May, with an additional 208 expected in June.
The meeting also covered plans to install modern bus stations in Lahore under the “Empower Her” initiative. Additionally, the Chief Minister granted initial approval for an e-bike scheme aimed at facilitating government employees.
