The Punjab Assembly’s Standing Committee on Interior has suggested introducing a “juvenile driving permit” that would allow 16-year-olds to legally drive small cars ranging from 660cc to 1000cc.
This recommendation follows the earlier approval of motorcycle permits for teenagers and is intended to place young drivers within a proper legal and regulatory system.
According to lawmakers, recent enforcement campaigns revealed that a large number of unlicensed drivers were students, which caused complications for families and educational institutions.
The proposed change aims to ease these issues while maintaining strict supervision and safety standards. Amendments to the Punjab Motor Vehicles Ordinance 1965 are currently being examined, with final implementation subject to approval by the governor.
