On Tuesday, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry opened a new ferry terminal at Karachi Port Trust (KPT), describing it as a major move to boost regional and coastal tourism and to support the growth of Pakistan’s blue economy.
While speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the minister said that the start of ferry operations had turned his long-cherished plan into reality to bring modern, safe, and eco-friendly sea travel to Pakistan. He also announced the soft opening of Pakistan’s first ferry service from Karachi to Iran’s Chabahar Port.
Officials said the ferry service is scheduled to begin in the third week of January, with the first voyage leaving Karachi for Chabahar and carrying up to 240 passengers. The travel time is estimated to be around 12 to 14 hours.
The service will run three return trips every week, and the fare for a round journey has been fixed at Rs 50,000 per passenger.
The minister added that this project is in line with the Prime Minister’s vision to make better use of the country’s blue economy potential and to expand economic activities linked to the maritime sector.
