Authorities in Punjab have officially approved the development of Pakistan’s first fully underground metro rail network in Lahore, a move considered a major milestone for the city’s modern public transport system.
According to government officials, the proposed 27-kilometre Blue Line will stretch from Valencia Town to Babu Sabu Chowk. Several underground stations are planned along the route, including Johar Town, Faisal Town, Garden Town, Kalma Chowk, Gulberg, Jail Road, Ferozepur Road, Wahdat Road, and Allama Iqbal Town. The metro service is expected to facilitate travel for more than 250,000 commuters every day.
The project’s estimated cost is likely to surpass Rs600 billion. Special tunneling machines will be used for construction, with the ability to dig approximately six meters per day.
Officials plan to complete the project in about three years. Initial financial approval and the PC-I are expected to be included in the 2026–27 budget. Authorities believe the underground metro will ease traffic congestion and greatly enhance Lahore’s overall transportation infrastructure.
