Nowadays, many vehicles can be seen on Pakistan’s roads with door handles that are not visible on the exterior.
Currently, this design feature appears in the world’s 100 top-selling new energy vehicles, where the door handles remain flush and do not extend outward.
Tesla was the first automaker to introduce this concept, but manufacturers in both the US and China are now encountering challenges linked to its implementation.
Recently, China became the first country to ban concealed door handles in electric vehicles (EVs), putting an end to the use of this debated design.
This move comes at a time when electric vehicles are facing intense global scrutiny over safety standards. Several serious accidents — including two involving Xiaomi’s EVs in China — have raised alarms that technical failures can prevent doors from opening.
In November last year, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) initiated an investigation into Tesla’s electronic door handles after reports claimed they failed unexpectedly, leaving children trapped inside vehicles.
The NHTSA stated that it received nine complaints related to door handle issues in Tesla’s 2021 Model Y. In four incidents, vehicle owners had to break windows to free those inside.
Under the updated regulations, vehicles will only be permitted for sale if they are equipped with mechanical door-release handles that protrude outward on both the interior and exterior. These regulations will take effect starting January 1, 2027.
