Punjab has launched Pakistan’s first-ever E-Taxi Scheme, officially inaugurated by Maryam Nawaz Sharif. The initiative aims to promote eco-friendly transport and create employment opportunities across the province.
In the first phase, 1,100 electric vehicles will be provided to drivers. A 30% quota has been reserved for women, with female-driven taxis featuring a separate color for easy identification. The government will pay 60% of the down payment for women and 50% for men.
The Punjab government will also cover vehicle registration, fitness tests, and token tax. The remaining amount will be payable in easy installments over five years.
For safety, each e-taxi will be equipped with a panic button connected to the Punjab Safe Cities Authority. The vehicles will be registered with ride-hailing platforms including InDrive and Yango.
This scheme marks a major step toward clean energy, safer transport, and inclusive economic growth in Punjab.
